When Ben was a schoolboy, he used to help a Boatbuilder called Freddy Downer, who built small yachts and small rowing boats in a large shed in his back garden.
When he was 16-years-old, Ben joined JS Whites in the Ship Drawing Office, beginning a five-year apprenticeship. He went on to work for Spencer Rigging.
Ben was also a professional sailor, representing Britain in international racing events, such as the America’s Cup, Admiral’s Cup and the Fastnet Race.
