Donald Young on Navigation
Lisa: So, how did you do it in the old days? How did you navigate in the old days before all this technology?
Oh well, you had to do it by sight, and you had to learn to recognise the bits of coast you were coming to.
Charts and that very often had outlines of the coast so that you could get an idea of what you was going to look for, and going across Channel where the tides either going one way or the other, with a small boat it would even itself out.
You would go 12 hours one way and 12 hours the other and that’s how long it would take you to get across.
Very often, if you were lucky, you would go a bit quicker and sometimes you’d go a bit longer
